Jews and Arabs gather at American Corner Yaffo  (ACY) for a multimedia presentation on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

An enthusiastic group of twenty five 10th & 11th grade English students from Tabitha High School in Yaffo visited the ACY on March 23 for a multimedia presentation on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the civil rights movement in the United States.  ACAO Roger Webb introduced powerful images and music of the era into the presentation to generate a reaction from the diverse group of Arab and Jewish students.  The audience were eager to relate Dr. King's ideals to their own experiences and social contexts and engaged in a lively discussion in which they shared their opinions on cultural identity and the challenges of living in a diverse, multi-ethnic society.  The presentation on Dr. King's non-violent approach to confronting oppression seemed to be admired by the students.  The students came well prepared to discuss the topic, and being  familiar with the history of the U.S., they were able to impressively debate in English the ideas and questions posed by the ACAO.  They underlined the importance of Dr. King's dream--of a day when we judge others solely on "the content of their character", rather than by their ethnicity or socio-economic status.
