Local students debate affirmative action as part of civil rights discussion at American Corner Yaffo

Deputy Consul General Rhonda Watson addressed an enthusiastic group of top level 11th grade English students from Lady Davis School in Tel Aviv at the American Corner Yaffo on April 27.  The program began with an exciting debate arranged and moderated by the students themselves on "Affirmative Action."  Following the debate, Rhonda Watson related American history and society in a way that motivated the students to think broadly about the power of moral conscience and civic engagement.  The presentation was followed by the screening of "Mighty Times - The Legacy of Rosa Parks," which captivated the young audience.  This HBO-produced video provided historical insights into the background and atmosphere in which America's civil rights movement emerged in the 1950s to become a major force for change.  The audience saw how one individual can indeed make a difference, without resorting to violence. The video was followed by a discussion with the students that underlined how we all have the capacity to make choices and to take a stand.  Ms. Watson, an energetic and inspiring speaker, concluded her presentation by reciting Maya Angelou's stirring poem, "Still I Rise."
